Galloways Society for the Blind are a local Lancashire charity who make a huge difference with their work throughout the community. Like most people I take my sight and the independence it gives me, for granted. Galloways aims to enable people with a visual impairment to gain greater independence and minimise the effects of living with reduced vision. This year they are aiming to raise £1 million in order to continue delivering their services. The services which Galloways deliver are hugely varied from transport services which pick up elderly people from their homes to attend social meetings (which may be the only time which they regularly leave the house), to supplying specialist equipment, offering 1-1 support, a talking newspaper service to enable individuals to keep up to date as well as cooking courses so visually impaired people can learn to cook safely. These services provided by Galloways support people living with sight loss to do such activities most people do daily without thinking twice and therefore enabling partially sighted individuals to live independently in a sighted world.
