Real stories of Progress

A day in the life for Callum, a Progress Housing Group apprentice joiner.

Here is a taste of what a typical day at work is like for Callum.

“I start work at eight in the morning when my mentor Ryan picks me up from my home in his works van. We then check the system iPad to see where we will be working and if we need to collect any materials beforehand.

“Our jobs can range from hanging doors and skirting boards to fitting window sills, boxing in pipes, or changing locks. When we arrive at the job, I will watch my mentor, Ryan, and follow his instructions so I can learn to do the job myself.

“Once a week, I also attend college to study Level 1-3 Joinery. “I wanted to become a joiner as I wanted a job that was active and hands-on. As an apprentice, I get to work with qualified joiners and am learning all the time, either on the job or through my college course. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others. It’s a great opportunity to learn on the job whilst getting paid. For me, it has been a great experience!

I hope to complete my apprenticeship in four years and become a qualified joiner with a range of skills that I’ve learned during my time at Progress Housing Group.”
